It is not a pretty picture I am interested in but truth: how I see things. With each subject, I try to paint as honestly as I can, to paint what I am looking at, to understand what seeing really is. Although the individual features of the face are important, it is a matter of trying to see what’s beneath the surface: to see the whole structure fitting together in space. This requires both a connection to and a degree of detachment from the subject.

This reaction becomes the Painting.
